On Thursday last we had a very special visitor to the club. The big man himself turned up to training to give our younger swimmers a nice Christmas treat!
Day 3 Finals Session
The finals session was lit alight on day 3 when Antoinette Neamt smashed her own Irish Junior & Senior records by over seven seconds in the 1500 freestyle swimming 16:32.73 in the very first swim of the session. That energy got reignited after the fifth final when Emma Reid broke the Irish Junior record for the 50 Fly. In the next ladies final the 200 freestyle Askeaton Swimming Club had a representative, Aoife Duggan McSweeney.
Aoife had swum a personal best time of 2:11.99 to get to the final. With only minor adjustments to be made from the heat’s Aoife lead the first 50 out in a blistering 29.9 and followed it with a 32.9 splitting the 100 mark with a 1:02.8. With the hardest 50 now started leg’s started going and a split of 34.0 saw Aoife in a race between 3 girls for 14th to 16th place.
In an exciting 50m Aoife split 33.53 and finish with an official time of 2:10.75. Finishing in joint 14th place. A remarkable achievement taking a further 1.24 seconds from her heat time and a toatl of 2.6 seconds from her entry time.
Below are the reports & media content preceding this one.

The “Host” club provided an array of food and brverages during the break which were very welcom.
Thanks to Askeaton Pool & Leisure Centre for the early morning opening. This was a huge help for our “training sessions” for the last couple of months which paid off on the day.

Swimming is a life time sport
Today was a very important day for the Club with the annual fund raising “Bazaar” being held in the community center. As you can see on the photographs, the hall was buzzing with fun activities…
The games were very busy all afternoon and the children were having great fun…. The different stands were offering good offers between toys, games, books, etc. The “Ricketing” wheel (Wheel of Fortune) was as popular as ever with Enda McDaid, did you see all the FAB spot prizes! The little “Coffee shop” kept everyone smiling and made the place so welcoming. Thanks to some excellent “Home bakers”, all sorts of home bakery treats were offered to all. Thanks to our “Sales Department!” with the sale of tickets for the “Spot prizes”, guess the name of Teddy and try to get your hands on the beautiful Christmas cake baked by Anna Greed, a lot of money was being raised.
18 swimmers competed at the Kingdom Invitation for Askeaton Swimming Club on November 29th.
An early start saw many sleepy heads on a bus trip to Tralee, but that’s where the tiredness ended. A fairly packed schedule saw a total of 18 events to be run.
Our swimmers competed in 62 swims and collectively gather 42 personal bests, 1 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals. For a competition where the aim was technical improvement a good set of statistics to read. And a well deserved trip to Jumbos in Listowel on the way home to replace the energy used saw team spirits rise.
Askeaton Swimming Club won the trophy for “Best Overall Club”
Munster Short Course Championships
The Munster Short Course Championships was given a new lease of life this year with the qualifying times being just 5% slower than the Irish Short Course Championship qualifying times 2013. This meant that the level of competition was superb. Every event was packed with National Champions, International and Olympic standard swimmers.
For Askeaton Swimming Club and its competitors this meet was about exposure to high level swimming and there was plenty of that over the weekend.
Mallow Invitation Gala Report
An early start saw a team of 45 athletes left Askeaton on route to the Mallow Invitation 2014. We had 172 events to swim, before we got to relays.
With just 5 weeks of training completed it was an ideal chance for our swimmers to set the pace for the season ahead and for the coaches to assess plans going forward.
